SDG triumphs at the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2009 (8 Apr 2009)
BACH CANTATAS - VOLUME 27 (SDG138) WINS THE CHORAL AWARD AT THE BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE AWARDS 2009.
John Eliot Gardiner's choral pilgrimage on his label, Soli Deo Gloria, continues to gather up the accolades.
In response to winning the awards, Gardiner stated, "I'm thrilled to bits. It's especially good that a project that started off surrounded by so many doubts has now been appreciated by such a wide audience."
It's nearly a decade since he began his pilgrimage, performing all of JS Bach's cantatas on the appointed days of the Church calendar all over Europe and the US. "It was a life-changing experience. To be in solitary confinement with JS Bach for a year was amazing."
BBC Music Magazine wrote:
"Each volume of Gardiner's Bach Pilgrimage Project is an event, and this volume is particularly strong, with very good singing from all the soloists: Peter Harvey and Paul Agnew are absolutely beautiful in Cantata No.194, and soprano Ruth Holten, who is lovely in No.129 delivers her all."
